Using Espresso Machine
- Preheat your machine, portafilter, and shot glass.
- Grind your coffee beans to fine ground. Make sure not to grind it too fine or too coarse in order not to have an under-extracted or over-extracted pull. The ideal ground size should resemble the size of sugar.
- Dose the right amount of coffee ground for your espresso in your portafilter. Generally, a single shot espresso would need about 7 grams, while a double shot espresso would need twice as much.
- Once you have the right measurements for your shot, it’s time to tamp your grounds to make a solid puck of ground coffee. Tamping creates a smooth and level surface for your grounds, which allows the water to penetrate more consistently. This is important to perfect as an improper tamp would most likely result in an under-extracted or over-extracted brew.
- After clearing your puck of excess coffee grounds, insert your portafilter to the group head and prepare to start the pull for your espresso.
- Most espresso machines have a built-in timer, but you also have the option to manually pull your espresso. Keep in mind that it generally takes 20 to 30 seconds to pull a shot; anything more or less would also result in an under-extracted or over-extracted shot.
Using French Press
- Preheat your teakettle with warm water
- Unlike the coffee ground used for espresso machines, French press brewing requires a coarser ground coffee, so adjust your grinder accordingly.
- Heat water up to 195-degrees Fahrenheit
- Add your ground coffee into your pre-heated French press using a 2:1 ratio. This ratio means to use two tablespoons of ground coffee for every cup of water. So if you plan to use two cups of water, add four tablespoons of coarsely ground coffee to your teakettle.
- Once you have the right measurements for your coffee ground, fill your French press half full and let the brew bloom for about 30 seconds.
- Pour the rest of your hot water over grounds and close the lid to allow the brew to steep for at least 5 minutes. Note that the longer you let the brew steep, the stronger the brew will be.
- Slowly press down to separate the grounds from the brew. Keep in mind to immediately transfer your brew to your glass as the grounds will continue brewing if you let it sit there for longer.
